Seniors

Although the social system as well as the language and culture are often different from those in Japan, the elderly are relatively well supported in many ways in the United States. Unfortunately, however, many people are unaware of such programs.

Here, we will discuss some of the programs that are available to the elderly, ranging from public pensions received in Japan and abroad, the government’s Medicare medical insurance for those over 65, the Medicare co-payment reduction program for low-income people (Medicare Savings Program), assistance with rent and utilities, and government services such as reduced public transportation fares and transportation services, to the Medicare program for the elderly, the Medicaid program for the elderly, and the Medicare program for the elderly. From free meal delivery services to non-profit organizations, this section provides information on programs that we hope you will take advantage of to make your life in the U.S. easier.

Also, by documenting your wishes while you are still in good health, you can avoid problems that could occur if something happens to you and you are unable to make a decision. In the “Burial, Funeral, and Late Life Issues” section, you will find information on healthcare proxies (health care proxies) that allow people you trust to make decisions about your health care; living wills (living wills) that allow you to specify the extent of treatment you want to receive; wills that determine the distribution of your property; and wills that give legal authority to people you trust. (Power of Attorney), and planning your own funeral during your lifetime.
