About JASSI:
The mission of Japanese American Social Services, Inc. (JASSI) is to improve the quality of life for people living in the New York metropolitan area by providing quality social services at the local community level. JASSI provides services in both Japanese and English to people who face problems resulting from language barriers, cultural differences, and/or differences in service systems, and JASSI provides these services regardless of age, income, gender, race, ethnicity, or immigration status. All services are provided without any charge.

Position Summary:
Japanese American Social Services, Inc. (JASSI) is currently seeking a full-time Director to join the team. The successful candidate will be responsible for making suggestions regarding future vision and strategic planning, agency administration, staff development and supervision, fiscal development and management, board relations, community relations, and community advocacy. S/he will oversee all aspects of its operations. S/he must be bilingual and able to speak, read and write in English and Japanese. S/he must be flexible, take initiative and demonstrate a strong leadership skill.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
– Planning and Administration

  • Ensure that the agency provides the highest possible quality services and is culturally competent and responsive to community needs.
  • Innovative program development and effective implementation.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the day-to-day administration of the staff, programs and activities of the agency to assure that objectives are attained and its mission is fulfilled.

 

Staff Development and Management

  • Oversee a small team of staff and volunteers, and provide guidance and support to teams as necessary.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop recommendations regarding staffing levels, salaries and benefits.
  • Promote professional development and leadership through regular staff meetings.

 

Board of Directors

  • Provide support to the Board of Directors in monthly board meeting planning as requested by the Board.
  • Identify and present problems of the many segments of the agency to appropriate association committees and the Board of Directors for policy development.
  • Keep the Board informed with detailed and accurate reports.

 

Fund Development and Fiscal Management

  • Develop annual budget and oversees their implementation.
  • Responsible for cultivation, development, management, and performance of government and private grants and contracts.
  • Oversee and take responsibility for agency compliance with grant or contract requirements, including outcome measures, invoicing and reporting.
  • Prepare and update reports and submit in a timely manner.
  • Together with the key staff members and the Board of Directors, plan and execute the agency’s annual gala.
  • Expand the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee program grant writing and contract renewal.

 

Community Relations

  • Manage the several events throughout the year.
  • Network with community organizations, government agencies, and private companies.
  • Establish and maintain relationship with various organizations to enhance the agency’s standing and operation in Asian community.
  • Provide community education and conduct presentations on an as needed basis.
  • Oversee communication materials including program brochures, social media, e-newsletters, and newsletters to deliver culturally tailored information to the community.

 

Client Services

  • Provide case management and supportive counseling services, including crisis intervention and advocacy, to individuals, families and older adults.
  • Conduct intake sessions to identify client’s current and future needs, to develop individual case plans and to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate services accordingly.
  • Connect clients to relevant referrals and assist them with accessing benefits and programs.
  • Maintain proper documentation of case work in accordance with agency and funder guidelines.

 

Others

  • Maintain up to date documents and policies (e.g. tax, organizational, board, human resources, fundraising).
  • Manage technical systems and maintenance of office equipment.
  • Perform such other duties as may be directed by the Board of Directors.

 

Education/ Skills Requirements: The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with a majority of the following:

  • Bilingual in Japanese is required.
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or related field strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years experience managing a social service program or organization.
  • Excellent organizing and time-management skills.
  • Attentive to details and deadline.
  • Professional attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Culturally competent professional committed to providing services in a manner that is sensitive to community member’s cultural heritage and traditions, life experiences, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Ability to take initiative and work both independently and in teams.
  • Must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment, with changing priorities and handling multiple tasks.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills required.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills a must.
  • Strong aptitude for presentation and relationship development required.
  • Leadership experience, preferably in the non profit sector.
  • Highly motivated and strongly commit to the goals and mission of JASSI.
  • Experience with Japanese American or Asian American communities preferred.
  • Experience working in a small non-profit environment preferred.
  • Experience in donor cultivation.

Position Summary:
Japanese American Social Services, Inc. (JASSI) is currently seeking a full-time Social Worker to join the team. In this role the successful candidate will provide client services/case management, including, supportive counseling and will work closely with other staff and volunteers to ensure that agency programs are carried out effectively and efficiently. As a professional, s/he will maintain high standards of ethical conduct and must be able to work with clients, staff and partnered agencies in an empathetic and caring manner. S/he must possess a willingness to learn. S/he must be bilingual and able to speak, read and write in English and Japanese. S/he must be flexible and take initiative when appropriate.

 

Responsibilities:
Client Services:

  • Provide case management and supportive counseling services, including crisis intervention and advocacy, to individuals, families and older adults
  • Conduct intake sessions to identify client’s current and future needs, to develop individual case plans and to deliver culturally, linguistically appropriate services accordingly.
  • Connect clients to relevant referrals and assist them with accessing benefits and programs.
  • Conduct in-home client assessments and follow-up visits to homebound seniors in need of services. (temporarily suspended due to the pandemic)
  • Advocate for the needs and concerns of elderly, low-income and/or vulnerable populations
  • Maintain proper documentation of case work in accordance with agency and funder guidelines
  • Record case notes, keep appropriate back-up documentation and files, and submit all paperwork required by the funder in a timely manner.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings.

 

Program Assistance:

  • Respond to walk-ins, hotline and e-mail inquiries and provide appropriate referrals
  • Interpret and translate information and documents
  • Research resources, information and data to assist in preparation of grant proposals and reports
  • Assist with coordinating and/or facilitating volunteer/staff training
  • Provide educational seminar to the Japanese/Japanese American community
  • Conduct outreach to the Japanese/Japanese American community
  • Assist with website updates and maintenance
  • Manage volunteer recruitment outreach
  • Develop and oversee communication materials including program brochures, social media, e-newsletters, and newsletters to deliver culturally tailored information to the community
  • Assist with all aspects of fundraising related events
  • Troubleshoot and maintain technical systems

 

Education / Skills Requirements:

  • Bilingual in Japanese is required
