As a result of the ACA, young adults up to age 26 are able to stay on their parents’ plan, there is additional drug coverage for people with Medicare, there are more free preventive services, and lifetime limits were removed from health insurance. In addition, beginning on January 1, 2014, discrimination due to preexisting conditions or gender has been prohibited, annual limits on insurance coverage has been eliminated, Advanced Premium Tax Credits (APTC) are available, more people are eligible for Medicaid in some States, and coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace has started.

THE HEALTH INSURANCE MARKETPLACE

As part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, the Health Insurance Marketplace (a.k.a. “Marketplace,” “Exchanges,” or “ObamaCare”) opened on October 1, 2013 to help people shop for and enroll in health insurance coverage. Through the Marketplace, individuals, families, and small businesses are able to compare insurance options, calculate costs, and select coverage online, in person, or over the phone. The Marketplace also helps people check their eligibility for health care programs like Medicaid and sign up for these programs if eligible. The Marketplace can also tell what type of financial assistance is available to applicants to help them afford health insurance purchased through the Marketplace.
